Outposts serve two purposes:

1. They are a station that pilots can dock at or launch from.
2. Miners can offload He3 at outposts.

They are primarily used to secure the outer boundaries of the team's territory. They are placed in key sectors which block the enemy's access to the sectors behind, and/or are placed more offensively to increase your team's access to the enemy sectors.

Since interceptors can not ripcord across the map, outposts are essential for team's that use interceptors so pilots can dock at one station and transfer to a different outpost where they're needed.
