How do I gain ranks?

From FreeAllegiance Wiki

Your rank in Allegiance is measured using a player-developed system called AllegSkill. The short version is:

In AllegSkill your rank is calculated from your skill rating (μ) and your uncertainty rating (σ). Your skill rating will go up/down depending on whether you win/lose games, but your uncertainty rating will only ever go down as you play more games and the system 'learns' more about you.

All new players start with an average skill rating and maximum uncertainty rating. Although it is assumed you are averagely skilled, you have a large handicap to your rank (which is based on your uncertainty rating) which reduces your rank back to novice. As you play more games this handicap is reduced and your rank more closely resembles your skill rating. Of course, if you are on the winning team then your skill rating will increase at the same time as your uncertainty rating is decreasing, causing an even faster gain in ranks.

Note Once your uncertainty rating decreases past a certain point the system will feel confident about its knowledge of you, and will bump you up to Novice 5 if you haven't reached that point already.
