Why doesn't my turret work?

If you jump on a turret and are unable to fire the gun or spin the viewpoint, it is because the pilot has removed the turret from the ship to decrease mass.

There is nothing you can do while in an empty turret. Your best option is to eject (press ctrl-shift-D three times by default). And next time check if a pilot wants a gunner before jumping on his ship!
